Subject: RE: bellringing
I've never rung a change, but, since I read "The Nine Tailors" I've wanted to.
They do ring changes at Bond Chapel at the University of Chicago, or they did when my sister was married. I remember how beautiful it was when she came out of the church and the bells pealed. The marriage didn't last. But I don't think it was the bell ringers' fault.

I was in a church in Abbeville South Carolina. The bell rope was within easy reach. The bell itself was brought across the state during the civil war, and nearly melted down to make cannon. I was sorely tempted to ring it, and resisted. I don't know that I will be so forbearing if I ever find myself there again.
