Before the Channel Tunnel was built, a geological research coy. was hired to look at the possibility of earthquakes in the region. Fortunately the English Channel (or La Manche if you're from the other side) is not in an earthquake zone. However, being nothing if not diligent, this company found in ancient French records that an earthquake was recorded in the 14th Century - no structural damage was recorded but a number of virgins in a church procession were knocked off their feet! Doesn't say if any non-virgins fell over - maybe the former are lighter?
