Godspell is one of my favorite musicals. It opened off-Broadway May 17, 1971, and ran for six years. Music and lyrics were by Stephen Schwartz, who also did lyrics and music for Pippin and The Magic Show.
songs:
All For The Best
All Good Gifts
Day By Day
Finale (Long Live God)
Learn Your Lessons Well
Light Of The World
O Bless The Lord
On The Willows
Prepare Ye The Way Of The Lord
Save The People
Turn Back, O Man
We Beseech Thee
Additional songs published in vocal score:
Alas For You
Prologue
Tower Of Babble
I think the song I enjoy most is "All for the Best," where they're singing two different melodies at the same time. I don't know what that technique is called - Frank Loesser used it quite often. I heard many of the songs performed at Mass in the late 1970's - they actually worked quite well in liturgy.
The play is based on the Gospel of Matthew, and I think it does a good job of portraying the basic message of Matthew. I try to watch the movie once a year, usually at Easter. -Joe Offer-
