BTW - I was curious as to the derivation of the word "gimble". Specifically, that it might actually have been a word made up by Mr. Carroll that has entered the language. I looked it up in several online dictionaries and got zero returns. Now, if my memory serves me correctly, a gimble is a mechanical contraption on which a stage or movie set is built that allows it to be tilted (as used in numerous ship-sinking movies). Why did five online dictionaries not list it? Is the word I'm thinking of spelled differently? Anybody got an OED subscription? Wait! Rap's a librarian! He'll solve the mystery!
