It reminds me of a sociologist who had been researching an arab tribe before WW2. He had noted that on journeys, the men went first followed by their wives who carried any luggage on their heads. After the war he observed that the women now went first - still carrying all the luggage though. He decided that perhaps contact with europeans had given the men the idea of "women first". He therefore asked one of the tribesmen about this and was told that the answer was even simpler - landmines !
