Quartz inversion is something that is of concern only to potters and other fools that like to turn clay into rock by heating it to extremely high temperature. Clay is composed mainly of silica and alumina. Silica, or silicon dioxide, undergoes a change in crystalline structure at 1063 degrees F when it changes from "alpha quartz" to "beta quartz". This change can cause pots to crack or deform if it occurs too rapidly. So, smart potters always fire with a slow temperature increase during the 1050 to 1100 degree temperature range.

Yeah, it's not a very interesting subject, but whaddaya expect for "Q"?
