The letter "S" is proud to present today's installment in the infamous LIST...

SOLAR HEATING!

Passive solar heating is usually accomplished by building a structure in such a way that the southern side is largely glass to allow sunlight in during winter months when the sun is low in the southern sky (at least in the northern hemisphere). Massive walls, earthen berms or barrels of water inside the building are warmed by the incoming sun and radiate the stored heat back out at night. The same berms etc. help cool the building in warm months by absorbing heat from the room atmosphere.

I had planned on building a passive solar-heated house when we moved to the country ten years ago. The little cabin we live in was supposed to be a temporary domicile which would be turned into a workshop after the main house was built. Hah! "The best laid plans of mice and men..."
