I use CDs. Drives are cheap these days and you can get CDRs for very little. I don't know about US prices but I just bought 100 for about £12 (plus postage). No cases with them though.
Thinking of SR's "thumb drive", I also have a "6-in-1" card read/writer in a little pouch which also contains a mini cd with drivers if needed - it all fits comfortably in my pocket - cost about £20. I think you can now get a 32Mb Smartmedia card for under £10.
