Love can be many more things than altruism, too. It can be a celebration of the universal spirit, thereby permitting uncalculated joy from the good luck of others. It can also foster compassion and forgiving, with or without altruistic effects. Lesser "love," as Little Hawk pointed out elsewhere recently, is usually a social contract with a host of conditions, or the biochemical disturbances referenced above.
