The whole point is that the textures, temperatures and flavours of the ingredients stay separate, so you have a layer of whiskey with a little sugar, then a layer of strong black coffee, then a layer of lightly-whipped cream poured over the back of a spoon so it sits on top. The constituents should only mix in your mouth, not in the glass.
