Thread Name: Right Wing Folksongs
Subject: RE: Right Wing Folksongs
Taking as a simplistic working definition that the left is trying to change present conditions and the right is trying to preserve them or return to earlier ones, almost all of the Copper Family songs are right-wing, in that they celebrate existing social structure and practices. So are all the gospel songs that preach acceptance today in exchange for improvement tomorrow--ably parodied by "Pie in the Sky". Many of the Left Wing "folk songs"--Pete's, Woody's etc.--were composed and promoted by an organized group seeking to promote an agenda. The Right didn't have--and didn't need--such a group.
