I think many young people are closet folkies. When you're in your teens, the peer pressure is pretty intense and a lot of kids don't want to seem uncool by openly liking folk or traditional music. I was always considered to be uncool anyway, so openly listening to folk was never an issue. Of course, having a couple of old Quebecois in the family who were musically inclined probably didn't hurt, either!
