This reminds me of a short short story by Isaac Asimov, about a meteor or comet approach. I'll paraphrase; don't have a copy of it....
As the object approaches Earth and it becomes certain it will strike, people begin saying goodbye. Mothers say farewell to their sons. Bosses say so long to their employees. Everyone waits, but nothing happens.
So it is all much adieu about nothing.
