I was walking home carrying an impressively heavy box of computer paper, when I saw Halle Bopp in the sky. It was awesome. It inspired genuine awe. I stood with that heavy box and stared, and understood why people might believe something like that was divine. The suicides in California that followed the comet's appearance were tragic and dumb. But that thing was truly impressive. Perhaps there was something of the divine in it.
