Until I was about 10 I seriously beleived that fingernails had a black rind. I remember being most concerned one day when I noticed my mum's nails had no rind. My daughter is similarly mucky, and my husband and I often argue over how much it matters (he thinks she'll get some nameless wormy disease thing).
