I think "golden compass" is a better title, in the sense that each book is named after an implement that helps Lyra and her friends. If the first book is called "Northern Lights" it's the odd one out. So maybe the US publication came after Pullman decided what the follow-up titles would be, and he brought that book in line with the others.
