I disagree personaly but, like music and literature, film is primarily about personal taste and is very subjective. That being said I will agree that the screen version of ROTK is the one that bugged me most as well. Having got both versions of the 2 earlier ones on DVD however I can see that some of the gaps left in the theatre version are going to be filled in on the extended DVD. Bloody annoying indeed but good marketing on New Line Cinemas part!

In answer to the original question. Don't know! The majority of people do seem to love him but, as Raedwulf points out, some people are vehemantely against. With opions split so diversely I suspect what will happen is that the awards will go to the blandest and least contraversial choice. Or the ones that put most mney into the pockets of the judges...
