Apparently, back in the 1950s, some psychologists tried an experiment. Subjects were shown a group of lines, and told they were to tell the testers if any of them were the same length. What subjects were NOT told was that one person in the room was an subject. The rest were part of the test. They would all give the same WRONG answer. More often than not, the subject could be convinced to follow the crowd. I think the Dean campaign lost to that kind of thinking.
