Patrick O'Brien is an author who wrote a whole series of novels about the British Navy in the Napoleonic era. Those novels feature two important characters: Captain Jack Aubrey, a career officer in the navy, and Doctor Ray Maturin, the chief surgeon on Aubrey's ship(s). They are very well written books and are almost universally considered to be the finest and most realistic and detailed depictions of the age of fighting sail. A movie was recently made, based on those same books, and it's very faithful to the books in every way. It's called "Master and Commander - The Far Side of the World". Go and see it.
