And the thing about no women...therefore an almost complete lack of sexual opportunity for the sailors at sea...was this: Men fight the enemy more vigorously under such circumstances. They've gotta do something with all that pent-up energy! :-)

But just wait till they get to port. Drunkeness and debauchery fit to curdle the blood! Wine, women, and song! It would be entirely possible to tell an Aubrey-Maturin tale that included such incidents, as well as touching on Aubrey's personal lovelife when ashore, which was quite involved as I recall from the books. They just didn't happen to do that in the first movie. I hope there's a second one.
