But you were correct, BW--Don't spray chemical fertilizers either. There are some very good organic fertilizers. Look in particular into horticultural cornmeal and corn gluten meal. Compost, green sand, lava sand, and even vinegar (used at certain times of the year) all have good fertilizer properties.
