Pasting to notepad strips out a lot of the formatting stuff that will be in the way in other applications. It's an easy place to work, and nice for stashing stuff until you need it.

RE losing stuff from one program to another: When I am closing down programs my Windows program often pops up and asks if I want to keep what I saved to the clipboard for other applications.
