Subject: RE: BS: Best 'Hostile to the opposite sex' song
How 'bout "The Wild Side of Life" followed by "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels"? Great songs and you can't really call it bashing because it's so nicely done.

Then "Blow Away the Morning Dew."

I don't think of these as hostile songs, (although some songs do get hostile) -- just a natural expression of a natural part of life. In all cultures there's rivalry between the sexes as to their roles and privileges. Often each group has certain privileges and rituals that exclude the opposite sex. In every culture I ever heard of, the men love to gossip -- and complain! -- about the women, and vice versa.

I once led an Open Sing with the topic "The Battle of the Sexes." In my write-up I said, "From 'The Maid on the Shore' to 'The Wee Cooper of Fife,' the question of who's going to be on top has been the subject of countless folk songs."

Well, I still think it's a good line. We got good songs from both points of view. Maybe there's a fine line between competition and hostility.
