Thread Name: BS: Oh the fucking, fecking, fudging FCC!
Subject: RE: BS: Oh the fucking, fecking, fudging FCC!
I am very much a civil libertarian, but I don't have any problem with the FCC wanting to keep certain words and behaviors off of broadcast radio and television. If they start fucking around with non-broadcast communication, that's a different matter all together.
I say "fuck" several times a day. I have an inalienable right to say "fuck" in my own home. However, I do not have a right to say "fuck" to every stranger I meet on the street. I don't have any problem with that. In fact, I don't exactly want perfect strangers coming up to me and saying "fuck".
So, what's the issue? If the FCC says that you can't say "fuck" in an on-air broadcast, that's no skin off my ass. If they say that a premium cable channel like HBO can't show programming with "fuck" used in it, that's another issue. If I know that HBO shows movies with "fuck" in them and I pay to have HBO cabled into my house then I'm saying that I don't mind the word "fuck" coming out of my television speaker. My Christian fundamentalist neighbor probably doesn't subscribe to HBO precisely because he knows that HBO movies will have "fuck" in them. He has a right to watch over-the-air television without having to listen to "fuck" coming out of his speakers.
The issue at hand before the FCC is only free, over-the-airwaves radio and television - not paid cable programming, movies, live performances, CD's or literature. Let 'em ban away.
