I don't think the success of the original Harry Ramsden's (at Guiseley) was down to the batter so much as the fact that like any other self-respecting chip'oil on that side of Leeds (the incomparable Bryan's comes to mind) they fry it in beef dripping. God knows what goes on in the franchised Harry Ramsden's that now litter the UK like Macdonalds.
