Subject: RE: BS: Who do you mildly disapprove of?
The design of most magazines. Here are my gripes:
* You can't find the table of contents without thumbing past 20 or so pages of ads.
* The table of contents, although it would easily fit on one page, is spread over several pages because it has to share each page with more ads.
* The titles of the articles, as shown in the table of contents, do not correspond in any obvious way to the blurbs on the front cover.
* The apparent relative importance of the articles as shown in the table of contents has no relationship to the size and apparent importance of the blurbs on the front cover.
* Even after you find the table of contents, and find the page number of the article you want to read, it's still hard to find the article because most of the pages don't have page numbers. (They don't want to mess up their beautiful ads by placing page numbers on them.)
* Even after you find the FIRST page of the article, you see that it says "Continued on page—" at the bottom, and then you have the same problem all over again.
* When you finally figure out how long the actual article is—the one whose blurb on the cover attracted your attention in the first place—it's often disappointingly short, and not worth the price of the magazine.
This is why I rarely buy magazines off a newsstand.
Come to think of it, my disapproval is more than mild.
