Since these steamies come from Montreal, they must be French-Canadian cuisine, or even Quebecoise. I've eaten both, and like any other cuisine they range from the sublime to the ridiculous. I've eaten in both Montreal and Quebec, and I've enjoyed wonderful food in both places (also some that was not-so-wonderful). But never, anywhere, in Quebec Province, not in Montreal, not in St. Jean Port Jolie, not in Quebec, not in St. Anne de beaupre, not in St. Joviet, not at Mt. Tremblant, not ANYWHERE in the WHOLE PROVINCE, EVER, have I run across something called a "steamie."
