Allison, it sounds as if your friend in college might have been manifesting signs of Munchausen Syndrome

As for the one you mentioned, Morticia, I don't know if it would come under the same heading, but it certainly sounds like some sort of attention-getting ploy. Hard to know what was going on in her head, but I'd say she obviously needs help.
