Thread Name: Lyr Req: We're going away- capstan
Subject: Lyr Req: We're going away- capstan
I couldn't find any reference in Mudcat. Charles Nordhoff, in his mid-19th c. book "Seeing the World" (other titles also) has a fragment of 'an old capstan song,' with a 'slow and plaintive tune.' Could someone identify it for me? Or is it one of the unknowns?

Chanty-man- We're going away from friends and home,
Chorus- Oh, sailors, where are you bound to?
Chanty-man- We're going away to hunt for gold,
Chorus- Across the briny ocean.

Chanty-man- Father and mother say goodbye,
Chorus- Sailors, where are you bound to?
Chanty-man- Oh, sisters, brothers, don't you cry,
Chorus- Across the briny ocean.
