It's difficult to measure the length of the strings when they're wrapped around the pegs but I guess they would fit into the tube. I have bought strings in the past and I'm sure that they came wound up in square paper envelopes

I can't come up with any other use for it so I'll go along with it being a string holder. Thanks for your ideas.
