The problem with that check box is that OE tends to think all attachments are suspicious - or at least too many to be helpful if you commonly trade stuff as attachments.

It's a little like the Office programs that try to refuse to open any Word document with a macro in it. Macros are useful and necessary in some useage of Word, and it's a pain getting it to turn off - and especially annoying when you open the same document, from your own machine, for the 20th time and it insists you shouldn't do it.

If you have a current version of a good AV that scans incoming email and attachments, you shouldn't need to have OE making a separate decision about it; but if "working around" it is more comfortable for you, then that's the way to go.
