Thread Name: Lyr Req: I'll Be with You When the Roses Bloom...
Subject: RE: Lyr: I'll Be with You When the Roses Bloom Again
The songster, Bill Williams of Greenup, Kentucky, had his own delightful take on this song and illustrates the interaction of white and black traditions. You can find out more about Bill, who was 'discovered' in the 1970s at the age of 73, at Stefan Wirz's wonderful site: CLICK HERE. Bill's song would also be relevant to the 'taxes' thread that is currently on foot.

I'LL BE WITH YOU WHEN THE ROSES BLOOM AGAIN

I was going down the hill to my little cottage home
And the revenues was a-waiting there for me
I was going down the hill when they caught me with my still
I'll be with you when the roses bloom again

When the roses bloom again (be)side the river
And the robin redbreast sings a melody
With the revenues I met, I can have a little rest
I'll be with you when the roses bloom again

They/(he) took me to the courthouse, the old (church?) he was there
He didn't show me any sympathy
We have caught you with the wine and we're gonna send you down the line
You'll be with us when the roses bloom again

When the roses bloom again (be)side the river
And the revenues have all gone to rest
We have caught you with the wine, we're gonna send me down the line (sic)
I'll be with you when the roses bloom again

Instrumental break

They/(he) took me to the jailhouse to ? ?   ninety days
And now I'm on the county road to stay
I was feeling mighty frisky when they caught me with my whisky
I'll be with you when the roses bloom again

When the roses bloom again (be)side the river
And the revenues have all gone to rest
I was feeling mighty frisky when they caught me with my whisky
I'll be with you when the roses bloom again

Instrumental break

When the roses bloom again (be)side the river
And the revenues have all gone to rest
With the revenues I met, I will have a little rest
I'll be with you when the roses bloom again
