Subject: RE: BS: Newcastle Brown Ale not made in Newcastle
Are there any breweries who still produce a proper Brown Ale these days. The Newcastle stuff, although very drinkable as bottled beers goes, was never what I would define as a brown ale, which was more of a bottled mild. At one time it was a standard product of every brewery, but now it seems to have completely disappeared. Rather as some Bitter drinkers would add a bit more sparkle to a pint by having a "Light and Bitter", many Mild drinkers would order a "Brown and Mild".

Brown Ale was usually slightly sweet and was wonderful for adding to casseroles and as far as I was concerned, indispensible for creating the perfect Welsh Rarebit.
