Subject: RE: Musical Ettiquette 2:Guitar vs. voice
One of my favorite songs is Bob Franke's THE GREAT STORM IS OVER. It's my opinion that the song is best if the verses are sung kind of lightly, with power and harmony in the chorus. Well, the only person in our song circle with a voice stronger than mine has another opinion. He sings the whole song loud and fast and a little off-key, and strums heavily on his guitar - the same way he sings most songs (no matter who chooses the song). We usually show up at the same two or three song circles every month. Well, he led the song once this month, and I sang along at the pace he set. I decided I wanted it sung my way last Friday, so I chose it.
He jumped right in there with his guitar at his usual pace and volume. I looked right at him and smiled, and held my hands apart and gradually moved them together, indicating I wanted it slower and softer. Darned if he didn't get the message. maybe a smile and a little body English is the trick. Hope he doesn't read this....
