A cut raw tomato rubbed on the burnt bits is also supposed to help ease the pain of sunburn.

I have been badly burnt a few times in my life....I belong to the generation who was sent out in the sun to play sans hat and of course there was no sunblock cream in those days. I can remember having nasty big blisters on my shoulders as a fried small fry. Once as a teenager I stayed out all day at the beach on the last day of my holiday (I lived in an inland town with a swimming pool but no sandy beach) and really cooked, I couldn't wear underwear as it hurt too much so had to wear my bikini instead because it fitted inside the white bits!

Ah.....the follies of youth. I still have a dense concentration of freckles on one thigh as a result of that episode.
