bobert, in Juneau a year or so ago there was a brouhaha when the city gave in and included homosexual couples as eligible for insurance plans. A number of people were up in arms about it - including a couple of friends of mine - because of the increased payout. Even though they admitted that in transient relationships there is only one beneficiary at a time, even though it took nothing away from straight signatories and even though if the city has to pay out more frequently, it also means that the city is taking in a great deal more.

If insurance companies weren't making a profit, they would change the contract. They're not in it for their health.
