Sonnet 07/03/04                     DCCCLXXXVII

The roses blush, to find themselves outdone
By your sweet smile. How can they hope to show
Even a tithe of hope my dreams have won?
How can I roses worthy of muse grow?
Even my dreams fail to these feelings tell,
That you give cause for hope to want to live.
You send reason to look ahead, and spell
That heals my soul, to all of past forgive.
In dream I hold you, when I cannot reach
To touch, or keep you warm: Am I a fool,
To give my dreams such power? Will they teach
A heart that yearns for passion to stay cool?
I do not think dreams will desires rein in,
Yet I cannot think that to love is sin.
