Bill, we had the same experience here! My oldest was weaned at about 2 1/2. One day she pointed at the Playboy and announced "milk!" She reached a point when she would ask for milk, but stop (usually right after the let down) because what she really wanted was a hug. So we talked about it and decided it was better if she asked for a hug if that was what she really wanted.

You should have seen her face when she was about two and we were in the grocery store dairy section. She asked what all of the white cartons were. I told her "that's milk." She looked straight at my chest, then back at the cooler section and was totally flummoxed. I had quite a good chuckle and went on to tell her how some of the rest of the world approaches the question of "milk." It was pretty easy to tell when she was ready to stop nursing. As a newborn she took so long that I always had a book to read. One day, at about 2 1/2, she climbed into my lap, started nursing, and opened a picture book to flip through at the same time. It was sad and funny, and pretty soon I started having her father read to her at bedtime. His lap didn't come with a milk bar.
