Thread Name: BS: NEED HELP--Vote for Millard Fillmore
Subject: RE: BS: NEED HELP--Vote for Millard Fillmore
Fillmore enforced the Fugitive slave law because it was the law of the land, and a result of the Dred Scott decision, which in some ways blurred the distinction between slave and free states.

If anything, the enforcement of the fugitive slave act actually advanced the abolitionist cause. It forced the so-called free states to face the fact that this country's laws allowed slavery to exist. Citizens in free states could no longer take comfort in thinking that slavery was a regional issue. A slave in America was a slave anywhere they went. If slavey was to be abolished, it would have to be on a national scale.

Whether as Whig or a Know Nothing, I would just like to see a president recognized, that neither of our current ruling duopoly of politcal parties can claim as their own.

I don't think Jefferson or Jackson would fall in line with today's Democrats, not do I think that Lincoln would identify with the current Republican Party.

Our exhalted icons are every bit as flawed as those left in obscurity.

A vote for Fillmore is the act of an iconoclast. Go ahead, smash those idols!
