as much as I detest football (even in scarlet) I feel that the terraces are possibly one of the last folk harbours. The chants, the songs, the victory dances - all throw-away and not very well documented.

Just like the reaction to Cecil Sharp's interest in the song "Seeds of Love" - the hedgcutter couldn't understand why an hedducated gent was interested in wot folks do all the time but hain't in no books.
