You probably want to open it up for a look before you spend any money. Believe me, a broken belt will be obvious, not test equipment needed.

A question: when you push fast forward or rewind, does anything happen? Usually, there are different belts for the spindles and the capstan. With mine, the tapes would FF or rewind, but not be driven by the capstan.
