They ALL lied about that one! It was equivalent to rolling an old drunk with his pockets full of valuable possessions (like Cuba, the Phillipines, Puerto Rico, etc...). Spain had no chance whatsoever in that war of national convenience. America even had "Butcher Wyler"...the Saddam of his day...with which to infuriate the righteous masses stateside. (He was the commanding Spanish general in Cuba, known for his ruthless counter-insurgencey efforts against the Cuban rebels...who were slowly winning anyway.)
