Forgivable if you didn't see the programme, but your friend who did watch may have noticed a microphone in front of Junes mouth. This is used to record the sound so a faithful representation of the performance may be heard upon broadcast.

I don't mean to patronise or be pedantic but how on earth would anyone know what the acoustics of the hall were like from watching the broadcast? Every single instrument on the stage was close-miced, with any reverb coming from electronics, which is obvious if you know about such things. If you don't know about such things then you're just spouting pseudo-knowledgable rubbish with comments about the acoustics. If you can't understand the words being sung (which were in fact perfectly clear) then blame the engineers at the BBC.
