It could be something beyond your firewall. Have you had storms in the region lately? If phone service is messed up or there is too much noise on the line it could cause a problem. I've had a couple of times when the DSL modem seemed to gradually slow down until it wasn't receiving at all properly (pages giving error messages). I turned it off and restarted it to clear up the problem.
