All I could think of when I read this was, "were they expecting something else?".

Speaking of osprey, I remember kyacking off Victoria Island, up in the Pacific NW, and watching an osprey hit the water and come away holding a magnificent fish in it's talons. It was just a moment of pure bliss to watch (though I imagine not for the fish).
