I'm wondering if anyone out there has some good words to describe those people who may not have achieved the status of "friend" yet, but are more than "acquaintance".

This has troubled me for a long time, since I often feel the word friend is overused, and therefore dimished, but I'm at a loss for another word that is between the two. Any ideas?
