On a lost lukin' bull-dog he'd just clapt his eye:

In 1860 the police had orders to secure all stray dogs. To asist them in this rather difficult operation each policeman had a stick, with a wire nooose at the end. The dogs, if not claimed within a given time, were destroyed. Much amusement was caused by the respective dodging of the dogs and the bobbies-the one to catch, and the other not to be caught.
