When a suit becomes a class action, the lawyers and judge have to agree on a definition of who is in the class and who is not. Then, they contact all class members and inform them about the suit and give them the chance to opt out. One reason they may want out is that staying in the class prevents you from taking action on your own.

If the suit is won or settled, the lawyers take about half of the money and the rest is split up among the class members according to some agreed on formula. After many years of process, each woman in the class will get a check for about $1.47 the signing of which will release the company from any further liability in this case.
