GrahamFair enough; I was probably a bit snappish about that. The Dubliners' recording of "Dirty Old Town" (I guess that's the one you meant?) is the one a lot of people remember, and it's understandable if they imagine it was meant to be about Dublin. As an Anglo-Scot, and long-time pub-session player, I do get a bit annoyed when people just assume that everything they like must be Irish; the music, good and bad, is shared pretty evenly between the nations. When I'm playing with a band, incidentally, I'll play DOT, or anything else the audience wants. If it's a session, then I'll please myself!
