Hitler was a mystic, caught up in the cult of personalities. War was a far more prosaic matter than he was ever willing to face up to. In the end those who had the most men, airplanes, ships, and tanks beat those who had less of all those things. It was a simple question of mathematics.

Like someone said (Grant? Sherman?), "God is on the side of the big battalions."

That's in a conventional set-piece war, of course. Guerrilla wars work a bit differently. As long as the guerillas have the will to keep fighting and a significant popular base of support to aid them, the war goes on.
